About the course

The Scientist Training Programme (STP) by Equivalence pathway offers an alternative route for healthcare science professionals who have already acquired substantial experience and qualifications in their field but wish to gain formal recognition equivalent to completing the traditional three-year STP programme. This pathway is particularly relevant for students who require structured mentoring and clinical placement experience to demonstrate their competence across the full breadth of healthcare science practice.

What is STP by Equivalence?
The STP by Equivalence route is designed for individuals who have developed their knowledge, skills, and experience through non-traditional pathways—perhaps through employment, prior qualifications, or a combination of both. Rather than undertaking the full three-year STP programme, candidates can apply to have their existing competencies assessed against the STP curriculum standards. However, it is important to note that most candidates will still require additional training, mentoring, and clinical placement experience to fill any gaps in their competence portfolio.

This pathway recognises that learning and professional development can occur in various settings and through diverse experiences. It acknowledges that not everyone follows a linear career trajectory, and that valuable expertise can be gained outside formal training programmes. Nevertheless, the standards required remain identical to those of the traditional STP route—the equivalence pathway is not a shortcut, but rather a flexible approach to achieving the same rigorous outcomes.

Programme Support and Resources Provided
We are committed to supporting you throughout your STP by Equivalence journey with comprehensive resources and structured guidance:

Clinical Placement Provision
We will arrange and provide clinical observation placements in hospital settings, ensuring you have access to appropriate learning environments where you can develop and demonstrate the required competencies. These placements will be coordinated to align with your Personal Training Plan and learning objectives.

Structured Mentoring and Training
Your development will be supported through a multi-faceted mentoring and training programme:

Awareness Day: You will attend an initial awareness day that introduces you to the equivalence pathway, explains the assessment process, and helps you understand what is expected throughout your journey.

Monthly Training Workshops: Regular workshops will be held to address key topics, develop specific skills, and provide peer learning opportunities. These sessions ensure you stay on track and have regular contact with the programme team and fellow students.

One-to-One Mentoring: You will receive dedicated individual mentoring sessions tailored to your specific needs, challenges, and learning objectives. These confidential sessions provide personalised support and guidance throughout your equivalence journey.

Portfolio Development Support
We will provide comprehensive support to help you complete both the first and second stages of your portfolio. This includes guidance on:

Selecting appropriate evidence
Structuring and presenting your portfolio
Meeting curriculum standards
Addressing any gaps in your evidence base
Assessment Preparation
To prepare you for the final assessment process, we will conduct:

Block Assessments: Structured assessments at key stages of your development to evaluate your progress and identify any areas requiring additional work before final submission.

Mock Interviews: Practice interviews that simulate the final assessment experience, helping you develop confidence and refine your ability to articulate your competence and professional development.

Beyond Qualification: Further Development Opportunities
After you complete your STP by Equivalence qualification, we will provide guidance on your next steps, including opportunities to contribute to the profession by becoming an assessor for the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) in the UK. This allows you to give back to the profession whilst continuing your own professional development and expanding your expertise in competency assessment and professional standards.
